Hamburg Sud has christened its newest containership, the 7,100-TEU Santa Catarina, in Itapo, Brazil as the fifth in series of 10 same-size vessels, each with 1,600 reefer plugs.
This comes as the German shipping group has invested in a 30 per cent stake in the new Tecon Santa Catarina Container Terminal in Itapo by its affiliate Alianca.
A statement from the shipping line said the newbuildings are among the largest ships ever built for the company, and all 10 vessels in this series are scheduled for delivery by summer 2012.
Since her delivery at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering's shipyard in South Korea in March 2011, the Santa Catarina has been operating in the carrier's service between Asia and South Africa/South America East Coast, the New Good Hope Express, according to the Shipping Gazette.
